The concert opens with Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury from 2019. According to the composer, her purpose is to take the audience on a journey that is both refreshing as well as calm and thoughtful. The composition draws its inspiration from two works: Haydn’s 60th Symphony and Shakespeare’s Macbeth. William Walton’s viola concerto from 1929 is interpreted by Lilli Maijala, one of the most internationally sought-after viola players from the Nordic countries. The music of the concerto brings to her mind images of the Atlantic waves in the 1st movement, the London rush and dry jazzy humor in the 2nd movement and the rolling country landscapes, the storm and the afterlife in the 3rd. The concert ends with the energetic 3rd symphony of a French composer Louise Farrenc from 1847.
