Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel: Overture in C major
Johann Nepomuk Hummel: Trumpet Concerto
Anestis Logothetis: Polymeron from “Himmelsmechanik”
Joachim Raff: Symphony No 10 “Zur Herbstzeit”
The concert begins with the overture by the virtuoso composer, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel. Fanny Hensel published her first compositions under the name of her brother Felix Mendelssohn, and it wasn’t until the age of 40 that she had a collection of solo songs published under her own name. However, later research has found more than 450 of Fanny Hensel’s compositions: 250 solo songs and another hundred different piano pieces. The overture in C major performed at the concert is her only orchestral piece.
Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s trumpet concerto, composed in December 1803, was heard on New Year’s Eve at the Esterhazy court in honor of Hummel starting his work as Haydn’s successor. The concerto is interpreted in Kuopio by the French trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary, who is a multi-awarded competition winner. The artist who plays both jazz and classical repertoire enjoys developing her own trumpet sound and the suitability of her instrument for all styles of music, from baroque to pop. The 25-year-old artist, who performs around the world, has released four critically acclaimed recordings on the Warner Classics label.
After the interval we turn our gaze to the sky with Polymeron by Anestis Logothetis, which describes a journey through the galaxies. In developing his style, Logothetis wanted to free the players to communicate with the audience and improvise. He developed his own graphic notation, where he used various visual symbols to make room for interpretation by the performers. The course of the work Polymeron, composed in 1960, also opens up visually while its graphic sheet music is projected to the audience.
The concert ends with Joachim Raff’s 10th symphony, the finale of which glows with the golden colors of autumn. The orchestra is led by Simon Gaudenz, who has been the chief conductor of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018 and of the Hamburg Camerata since 2012. As an internationally sought-after guest conductor, he conducts numerous renowned orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the radio orchestras of Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart and the eAI Symphony Orchestra.
Duration approximately 1 hour 35 minutes including interval.
