“Marie Antoinette was a mere 14 when the Hapsburg princess married the fresh [sic] prince of Versailles, Louis-Auguste, who would later become King Louis XVI. The young queen was never able to relinquish her connection to her Austrian roots, keeping up correspondence with her family and surrounding herself with many German and Austrian composers. Joseph Haydn named a symphony after her, while the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart titled his 31st symphony, ”Pariser”, during his stay in the French capital in search of patronage. The queen herself was a harpist and cembalist (harpsichordist). Her keyboard teacher was the German virtuoso, Jean-David Hermann, who wrote a set of Harp Concerti. French harpist, Anaëlle Touret, brings her aritistry to Kuopio in the first of Hermann’s beautiful concerti. As with many aristocrats of her day, Marie Antoinette was also a lover of theater, opera, and ballet. For her, there was no greater composer than Christoph Willibald Gluck. Though her penchant for Austro-German composers made her incredibly unpopular with the French people, with 300 plus years of hindsight, we can be grateful to the young queen for her exquisite taste in music.”
