“We begin our exploration of the 19th Century musical battlefield with a dramatic cross section of the New German School. Known to be the Avantgarde, the founding members initially included Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Franz Brendel, the influential music critic and successor to Robert Schumann as the editor in chief of the Neue Musikalische Zeitung. In this program, we introduce the two key players that truly changed the course of music history, namely Wagner and Liszt. The former was inspired by the latter’s pianistic freedoms, and wanted to apply that to his orchestral interpretations. The resulting style was hyper-expressive, going well beyond the written text and elevating conducting to a creative art form. The ultimate embodiment of the movement was the superstar conductor and sometimes composer, Gustav Mahler. His ambitious 1st symphony is hardly a work of a young composer. Without text, he spins an elaborate symphonic tale, worthy of Goethe and Jean Paul, whose novel, ’Titan’ was the inspiration for Mahler’s symphony/tone poem.”
