Kuopio Chamber Music Society (Kuopion kamarimusiikkiseura ry), affectionately known as Kukamus, presents an atmospheric concert on Saturday, 21 November at 4:00 PM in the Chamber Music Hall of the Kuopio Music Centre, featuring chamber music spanning three centuries. The concert is a tribute to the rich chamber music tradition of the Northern Savo region, which audiences have enjoyed through Kukamus concerts for the past 18 years.

The programme opens with Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Two Preludes and Fugues for cello and piano, a work whose themes are derived from the names of fellow composers Einar Englund and Béla Bartók.

Robert Schumann’s song cycle Liederkreis, Op. 39, is based on poems by Joseph von Eichendorff. The cycle reveals a clear duality: the first half is largely infused with love and happiness, while the latter songs turn toward reflections on transience, memory, and the timeless nature of existence.

Georg Philipp Telemann’s Canonical Sonatas, published in 1738, were written for two instruments of equal importance. In this performance, the dialogue unfolds between flute and violin, whose contrasting yet complementary voices bring the music vividly to life.

The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, often referred to as the “Rain Sonata” due to its references to Brahms’s earlier song Regenlied (“Rain Song”). Completed in 1879, it remains one of the most beloved works in Brahms’s chamber music repertoire.

There will be an intermission.
