Charlie Chaplin’s fourth silent film Circus was released in 1928. It won Chaplin his first Academy Award (it was still not yet called the “Oscar”). This love story begins when the Little Tramp is engaged as as clown by a travelling circus. He falls in love with the ill-treated daughter of the circus proprietor. The romance prospers, despite the Tramp’s encounters with a lion and other hazards of the circus, until the appearance of a rival, the handsome new tightrope artist, Rex. The film is rich in comedy, but also excitement, romance and funny incidences.
