Shuntaro Sato

Shuntaro Sato acted as the KSO Principal Guest Conductor in 2000-2003.

Conductor Shuntaro Sato (b. 1972) studied the violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London and politics at London University. His conducting teachers have been Diego Masson, Geraint Jones, Lawrence Leonard and Janos Furst. His first regular appointment was as conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra in 1996, immediately after his debut at the Barbican Centre in London. He has since conducted this orchestra in more than 50 concerts in all in England, Germany, France, Turkey and Austria. In England he has also conducted the London Philharmonic (1998–), the Philharmonia Orchestra (1999–) and the Bournemouth Symphony (2009–).

Shuntaro Sato has conducted almost all the Finnish orchestras since his debut with the Helsinki Philharmonic in 1998. He was Principal Conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra for the 2002/2003 season. In Japan he has conducted such orchestras as the Kyoto Symphony, the Osaka Philharmonic, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, the Japan Philharmonic, the New Japan Philharmonic and the Japan Chamber Orchestra.

Other orchestras with which Shuntaro Sato has appeared have included the Boston Chamber Orchestra (at the Tanglewood Festival), the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Orquesta Pablo Sarasate in Pamplona. Among the artists with whom he has worked are Pinchas Zukerman, György Pauk, Augustin Dumay, Sarah Chang, Nigel Kennedy, Anne Akiko Meyers, Tasmin Little, Gerard Causse, Mischa Maisky, Raphael Wallfisch, Julian Lloyd Webber, Cristina Ortiz, Peter Donahoe, Emma Johnson, Barbara Hendricks, Magdalena Kozena, Thomas Allen, Lesley Garrett, Andre Bochelli and Marko Ylönen.

After many years in Europe, Shuntaro Sato now lives in Japan.
