Peteris Vasks: Cello Concerto No 2 ”Klātbūtne” (2012)
Anton Bruckner: Symphony No 6 in A major WAB 106 (1879-1881)

“Peteris Vasks’ music speaks where words fall silent. A meditation in sound and silence, where simplicity reveals profound depth. I am very much looking forward to perform this piece with the Kuopio Symphony and Marzena Diakun.”
Torleif Thedeen

The cello has always been a close instrument to Pēteris Vasks. His Second Cello Concerto, subtitled Klātbūtne (“Presence”), was completed in 2012 for cellist Sol Gabetta and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The work is deeply human and rooted in the present moment – the solo cello moves through fragility, restlessness, and hope, acting almost like a human voice: carrying, vulnerable, and intensely expressive. The music unfolds in Vasks’s characteristic long arcs, quiet introspective moments, and powerful outbursts that mirror the contradictions of the modern world – but also its beauty.

Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 is one of his most distinctive and bold creations: clear in structure, rhythmically idiosyncratic, and full of inner strength. Bruckner composed it at a time when his music was gaining recognition yet still met with suspicion and criticism. The symphony emerged during a period of artistic transition: he had just completed the monumental architecture of his Fifth Symphony and was now seeking a lighter, more luminous mode of expression. The result is a symphonic journey that is at once noble, fresh, and profoundly human. Although the work received its first complete performance only after the composer’s death, it has since become one of his most respected and individual symphonies.

Duration approx. 2 hours including interval.

The concert is included in the Season Series Ticket and Mini Series Ticket 1.
