”Bookending the sublimely beautiful and cinematic Korngold Violin Concerto with the wonderful violinist Isabelle van Keulen, we have two very programmatic pieces from different eras.  Anna Clyne is one of the most interesting, inventive and accessible contemporary composers on the circuit today. This Midnight Hour will take the listener on a journey, fitting nicely as a concert opening complement to the iconic storytelling of Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  A concert to let one’s own imagination run free and wild!”

Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour is an electrifying and imagination‑stirring orchestral journey into the pulse of the night. This intense and cinematic work draws its inspiration from poetry and the mystique of darkness. The music surges forward like an uncontrollable force: dark‑hued, pulsing, and full of sudden twists that keep the listener firmly in its grip. 

Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D major is one of the most beloved concertos of the 20th century. It is a masterpiece glowing with the radiance of the composer’s Hollywood years, where enchanting melodies and rich orchestral colours intertwine with a virtuosic violin soloist. The work blends late‑Romantic passion with the sheen of film music in a way that makes it an enduring audience favourite – tender, sparkling, and unforgettable in its beauty. 

Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is one of classical music’s most striking musical journeys: a work that leads the listener through an imaginary art exhibition, where each painting comes to life as its own vivid and dramatic musical world. The colours of the original piano suite expand into full symphonic brilliance in Maurice Ravel’s magnificent orchestration, turning each movement into a unique experience. Among the best‑known sections are Baba‑Yaga and The Great Gate of Kiev.
