Isabelle van Keulen performs Korngold’s cinematic Violin Concerto

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s autumn season concert series opens on Thursday, 10th of September at 6 pm with the Pictures at an Exhibition concert, presented in collaboration with Jyväskylä Symphony. At the Concert Hall of the Kuopio Music Centre, audience will experience the power of a combined large-scale orchestra under the baton of Grammy Award-winning conductor Karen Kamensek. The evening will feature a performance of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto by the outstanding Isabelle van Keulen and conclude with Modest Mussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition.

Conductor Karen Kamensek, leading the combined forces of the KSO and Jyväskylä Symphony on 10th of September, invites audience to a concert where imagination is free to run wild. The evening opens with Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour (2015), a work inspired by poetry and the mystique of the night. The music surges forward like an uncontrollable force: dark-hued, pulsating, and full of sudden twists and turns that keep listeners firmly in its grip.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D major is one of the most beloved concertos of the twentieth century. A masterpiece composed during the composer’s Hollywood years, it weaves enchanting melodies and rich orchestral colours together with a virtuosic violin solo part. Combining late-Romantic passion with the glamour of film music, the work has become a perennial audience favourite. The concerto will be performed by Isabelle van Keulen, who regularly appears on the world’s most prestigious concert stages and is one of the few musicians to have achieved international acclaim as both a violinist and a violist.

Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is one of classical music’s most compelling musical journeys. The work leads listeners through an imaginary art gallery, where each painting comes to life as its own colourful and dramatic musical world. In Maurice Ravel’s brilliant orchestration, the nuances of the original piano work expand into a dazzling symphonic palette, making each movement a unique experience. Among the most famous are The Hut on Fowl’s Legs (Baba Yaga) and The Great Gate of Kyiv.

The duration of the concert is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, including an interval. The concert will also be performed on Friday, 11th of September, at Jyväskylä Paviljonki.

Before the concert, at 5.30 pm at the Hall of Light, there will be a Pre-Talk open to all, with the artists of the evening.

Tickets: 34,60 € / 28,10 € senior citizens and groups min. 20 persons / 10,60 € children under the age of 16 and students.
