Drama films visualize orchestral mastepieces performed by KSO and Jyväskylä Sinfonia

On Wednesday 4th of May at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall the audience will experience a visual concert Symphonic Cinema for the first time in Finland. In the concert classical music masterpieces are visualized into fairytail like dramafilms, which will be edited live to the music by Dutch film director Lucas van Woerkum. The impressive orchestral ensemble of the KSO and Jyväskylä Sinfonia conducted by Ville Matvejeff will perform Sergei Rachmaninov’s Island of Death and Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis & Chloé.

Symphonic Cinema is a visual concert experience that has never before been seen in Finland. In this innovative and unique new format the stories behind the classical music masterpieces are visualized into newly created drama films. The films, edited to the music, are created by Dutch film director Lucas van Woerkum who performs as ‘image soloist’. ”The score is analyzed in detail, so that the film can highlight the structure of the music, to help the audience in understanding the music on a deeper level”, van Woerkum tells.

The films are made in the genre of Magical Realism.” They picture characters that you can relate to, but I place them in abstract surroundings and surrealistic situations”, van Woerkum says.

In this concert the visual stories are entwined with two different compositions: Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé and Sergei Rachmaninov’s Island of Death. The impressive ensemble consisting of two symphony orchestras is conducted by Ville Matvejeff, Chief Conductor of the Jyväskylä Sinfonia.

The concert is recommended for over 12 years olds.
