Einar Englund’s piano concerto interpreted by expressive Mirka Viitala

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s season concert Finnish Maestri on the 7th of December at 6 pm will introduce three works from more rarely performed Finnish composers. The concert begins with the great symphonist, Leevi Madetoja’s 1st symphony and the evening’s solo piece will be Einar Englund’s energetic 1st piano concerto interpreted by Mirka Viitala. After the intermission we will hear the late-Romantic 1st symphony of Helvi Leiviskä conducted by the Chief Conductor Eugene Tzigane. The concert organized at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall will also be livestreamed on the orchestra’s Youtube channel.

In this celebration of Finnish Independence, the KSO presents three Finnish Maestri of the 20th century. The concert begins with Leevi Madetoja, a student and life-long admirer of Sibelius, who excelled in gorgeous sonorities and color, combining French sensibilities with Nordic formal logic. His 1st symphony was written in 1916, the year Einar Englund was born.

The younger composer gave us 7 wonderful symphonies and many concerti. Mirka Viitala plays his magnificent 1st Piano Concerto from 1955.

The last work is by Helvi Leiviskä, a student of Madetoja before WWII. Her 1st symphony from 1947 is an opulent, late-Romantic work with many Modernist touches and daring sonorities, yet one can hear the echos of Sibelius and Madetoja. ”It is a rare event in which we are proud to present these spectacular and highly under-rated composers all in one evening!”, says Eugene Tzigane.

The concert will be livestreamed on the KSO YouTube Channel.
