Pianist Risto-Matti Marin as the soloist of Scharwenka’s concerto

The KSO concert on the 3rd of March at 7 pm offers slavic ardor from two Czech composers and a Polish-German pianist Franz Xaver Scharwenka. His awesome Piano Concerto is interpreted by Risto-Matti Marin, who started his piano studies in Kuopio and is now one of the top pianists in Finland. The concert begins with Vitĕzslava Kaprálová’s charming Suite en miniature op. 1 and ends with the fifth symphony of Antonín Dvořak. The orchestra is conducted by Mihhail Gerts.

The KSO concert on the 3rd of March begins with Vitĕzslava Kaprálová’s suite rooted in Slavic romanticism. The composition is based on the musical material of the composer’s piano suite from 1931.

Franz Xaver Scharwenka’s Piano Concerto no 1 is dedicated to Franz Liszt and requires huge virtuosity from its soloist. Two years after composing the piece in 1877, Scharwenka performed it in England at the Crystal Palace – the work was a great success.

In Kuopio the concerto is played by Risto-Matti Marin, who started his piano studies at the Kuopio conservatory and continued at Sibelius Academy. Marin has premiered several Finnish contemporary works for the piano and recorded many internationally acclaimed solo piano discs. In addition to his work as a piano recitalist and chamber musician Marin lectures on piano music and teaches at masterclasses among others.

The concert ends with Antonín Dvořak’s pastoral symphony nr 5. It was a beginning of the series which can be recognised as Dvořak’s symphonic masterpieces. The orchestra is conducted by Mihhail Gerts, who belongs to the top class of internationally known, Estonian conductors. In addition to his symphonic concert career, Gerts has also gained extensive operatic experience.
