Violinist Isabelle van Keulen as the soloist of KSO

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s concert Culmination of the Sibelius Cycle on Thursday 10 February, 2022 at 7 pm ends with Jean Sibelius’s last and masterful 7th Symphony. One of the most versatile violinists of our time, Isabelle van Keulen, interpretes Two Serenades by Sibelius, as well as Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 5, also known as the Turkish. The evening begins with Austrian composer Franz Schreker’s Scherzo for strings. The concert will be performed under the baton of viennese-born Sascha Goetzel, former Principal Conductor of the KSO in 2007-2013, in front of a live audience at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall.

All the composers of the concert also have a personal connection to the city of Vienna. Franz Schreker studied at the Vienna Cconservatory at the same time as Sibelius – Scherzo for string orchestra was composed at that time. In 1775 at the age of 19, Mozart composed five violin concertos in the course of nine months: his fifth concerto, also known as the Turkish, was influenced by the music of the Ottoman Empire.

After finishing his most often performed Violin Concerto in 1905, Jean Sibelius wrote, amongst others, the two serenades for violin. These compositions offer the soloist ample opportunity to showcase virtuosity and expressiveness. Violinist Isabelle van Keulen is known especially for her musical intelligence, extremely conscious approach to interpretation as well as inspirational, lively and enthusiastic performances.

With his Seventh Symphony, Sibelius made his last statement of his entire symphonic series. The absolute mastery of the piece show that Sibelius weighed every detail carefully. It is not just the form that is powerful, Sibelius’s use of colour is also skillful, filling a whole pallette of colors. This is a moment of musical magic.

Duration approximately 1 hour 45 minutes including interval.

The concert is performed in front of a live audience at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall and also livestreamed to the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s YouTube Channel. The concert will be available on the YouTube Channel for one month after the concert.
