The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s concert Call of the North on 18 November, 2021 at 7 pm introduces two compositions inspired by the Finnish nature. The concert begins with Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus and ends with Symphony No 6 by Jean Sibelius. The concert livestreamed from the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall is conducted by Jaakko Kuusisto, the KSO Chief Conductor.

Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus, composed for birds and orchestra, is his most popular orchestral work. This idiomatic, ear-opening transcription captures the essence of Rautavaara’s musical language, harmonies and melancholy combined with the mysticism of nature. It incorporates tape recordings of birdsong recorded near the Arctic Circle and on the bogs of Liminka, in Northern Finland. The ”song birds” of the evening are, for example, whooper swan, crane, curlew and horned lark.

Jean Sibelius has said about his sixth symphony that it always reminded him of the scent of first snow. The composer wanted to offer listeners ”a drink of pure water” instead of the elaborate compositional ”cocktails” of, for example, Strauss and Mahler who had been dominating European music with their orchestral blockbusters. Jean Sibelius’ Sixth Symphony is a beautiful enigma. The subtlest and most lyrical of his seven symphonies, it is the least often performed.

The concert is performed infront of a live audience at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall and also livestreamed to the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s YouTube Channel. The concert will be available on the YouTube Channel for one month after the concert date.

Free entrance. The duration of the concert is approximately 1 hour, no interval.

The KSO Spring 2022 Season Concerts will be published before the concert and Season Tickets for the Spring 2022 Season Concerts are available for purchase. See the KSO Spring Season Concert programme: www.kuopionkaupunginorkesteri.fi/en.
