Orchestra is coached by improvisation expert Matthew Barley

On Saturday 14th of January at 6 pm we will enjoy the results of the KSO’s creative week coached by the British improvisation expert and cellist Matthew Barley. During the week the musicians are working on the classic piece In C by Terry Riley. In addition to In C, the musicians will create their own music to the concert that will be held at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall.

In the beginning of the spring season 2023, the KSO musicians will jump into the world of improvisation. They will be working on Terry Riley’s minimalistic piece In C (1964) and music created themselves during the week. The orchestra will be coached by the British improvisation expert and cellist Matthew Barley, who has visited Kuopio already several times. Barley’s international career is full of improvisation, new music, collaboration with jazz and Indian musicians, education, and arranging among others.

Terry Riley’s In C is a minimalistic piece for an indefinite number of performers without a specified instrumentation. It receives numerous performances every year, both by orchestra musicians and of other genres. In addition to the Riley’s piece we will hear new music created by the KSO musicians during the week.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 10 minutes, no intermission.

Tickets: 4 €. Prices include the Kuopio Music Centre service fee 2 € / ticket. The service fees vary depending on the place of purchase.
