At the KSO season concert on Thursday 24th of February at 7 pm we will experience a premiere composed for an unusual instrument when clarinetist Fatima Boix Cantó will interpret Kalevi Aho’s new Piccolo Clarinet Concerto Simplicius Simplicissimus. At the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall we will hear also two joyful symphonies, Prokofiev’s first and Beethoven’s second. The orchestra is conducted by Leo McFall.

At the concert on the 24th of February KSO will perform composer Kalevi Aho’s premiere for an unusual instrument, piccolo clarinet. Also the concerto itself is special – it is based on H.J.C. von Grimmelshausen’s novel, where the hero Simplicius Simplicissimus experiences incredible adventures. In Aho’s concerto the piccolo clarinet has the role of Simplicius. The piece is composed for the soloist Fatima Boix Cantó, who among others works as a clarinetist of the FRSO and has premiered several works of contemporary composers.

The premiere is framed with two joyful symphonies. In Sergei Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony the composer tried to think over how Joseph Haydn would have composed in year 1916. The result is true Prokofiev, but a contrast to the avant-garde trends of the 1920th century. In the Second Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven the influences of Classicism are still present, but the period of Romanticism is already coming. The concert is conducted by British-born and internationally working Leo McFall, who has also studied at the Sibelius Academy conducting class and has been awarded several times.

Before the concert at 6.30 pm there will be an artist meeting open for all with composer Kalevi Aho at the Kuopio Music Centre Hall of Light. Restaurant Oodi is open for customers one hour before the concert and during the intermission.
