The KSO Spring Season Series begins at the Kuopio Music Centre on Thursday 2nd of February with the new Chief Conductor Eugene Tzigane. The soloist will be the solo French horn player of the Prague Symphony Orchestra Zuzana Rzounková, who will perform the popular first French horn concerto of Richard Strauss. The concert begins with Kurt Schwertsik’s Shrunken Symphony and ends with Franz Schubert’s Symphony in C major ”The Great”. Before the concert we will enjoy an open rehearsal at 12 pm at the Concert Hall and an artist meeting at 6 pm at the Light Hall.

The first spring season concert begins with Kurt Schwertsik’s quite rarely performed Shrunken Symphony from the year 1999. As an opposite we will hear Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major ”The Great”. It has often been cited as the first of the big Romantic symphonies.

The soloist of the evening will be the Czech French horn player Zuzana Rzounková, who will interpret the first French horn concerto by Richard Strauss. The French horn has a special role in Strauss’ production and also this concerto is a showpiece. The melodies are catchy and indentifiable with a fanfare style. Rzounková belongs to the top class orchestral musicians, who are regularly invited to cooperate with many orchestras at home and abroad.

The season concert is conducted by the new Chief Conductor Eugene Tzigane. His trademark is constantly discovering fresh ways of performing familiar repertoire.  The orchestra and audiences alike in Kuopio have also enjoyed his choices including especially forgotten works and music by minority composers. The autumn season 2023 will be the first season planned by him.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 40 minutes, including interval.

Before the concert at 6 pm there will be an artist meeting at the Hall of Light. First, the directors of the Kuopio Dance Festival, Riku Lehtopolku and Salima Peippo, will introduce the festival program for summer 2023. From 6.30 pm on Katariina Kummala, the director of the Kuopio Music Centre and the KSO will host an interview with the artists of the evening’s concert and discuss their thoughts, for example, about the program.

On the same day at 12 pm there will be an open rehersal at the Concert Hall, where the orchestra will play a part of the evening’s program. The duration of the rehearsal is about 50 minutes, free entrance. In addition, during their visit the audience can also enjoy a buffet lunch at the Music Centre’s restaurant Oodi. Lunch is served between 11 am and 2 pm at the Hall of Light, price is 10,50 €.
