Jazz Trumpetist Jukka Eskola as the soloist in Jaakko Kuusisto’s Concerto

Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration premiere in Finland

One of the most sought-after jazz artists in Finland, trumpetist Jukka Eskola will perform with the KSO on Thursday 14th of October at 7 pm. He will play Jaakko Kuusisto’s rhythmical Trumpet Concerto at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall. As an overture we will hear the Finnish first performance of Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration. The concert will end with the fifth symphony of Pyotr Tschaikovsky conducted by the KSO Chief Conductor Jaakko Kuusisto.

Trumpetist Jukka Eskola, originally from Kuopio, belongs to the most distinguished jazz musicians in Finland today. At the KSO concert he will be heard as the soloist in Jaakko Kuusisto’s Trumpet Concerto, a piece full of rhythm and jazz influences in the harmony. The concert is the first performance for Eskola as a soloist with symphonic programme.

The concert opens with a Finnish premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration, inspired by Detroit’s landscape of factories. “This is music about the transformation of grit and noise (here represented by the percussion, piano, harp and pizzicato strings) into something massive, resonant and unexpected”, says Mazzoli. The concert ends with Pyotr Tschaikovsky’s fifth symphony, where the composer carries the idea of fate throughout the symphony.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 40 minutes with an intermission.
