The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s autumn season concludes in grand style at Kuopio Cathedral on Thursday, December 18th at 6 pm with Georg Friedrich Handel’s oratorio Messiah. Joining the orchestra is Ensemble Nylandia under the baton of baroque specialist Matias Häkkinen. The emotionally stirring vocal parts will be performed by an outstanding lineup of soloists and the Chamber Choir of Sibelius Academy’s Kuopio Unit.
On December 18th, the audience will be led into the splendor and warmth of the Christmas season by one of the most beloved oratorios and perhaps Handel’s most famous work, Messiah, a masterpiece of European musical styles. Its magnificent choruses and beautiful arias tell of the birth, death, resurrection, and triumph over suffering of the Messiah. The best-known section is the Hallelujah chorus, one of the most celebrated melodies in music history. The performance will feature W.A. Mozart’s arrangement of the work.
Sharing the stage with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra will be the early music collective Ensemble Nylandia and the Chamber Choir of Sibelius Academy’s Kuopio Unit, coached by Saara Aittakumpu. The oratorio’s soloists are Rachel Fenlon (soprano), Elli Vallinoja (alto), Jussi Salonen (tenor), and Veikko Vallinoja (bass). The ensemble will be conducted by Ensemble Nylandia’s artistic director, Matias Häkkinen.
The concert lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Tickets are recommended to be purchased in advance to avoid congestion at the cathedral entrance.
Tickets: 33 € / 27 € senior citizens and groups min. 20 persons / 11 € children under the age of 16 and students / 4 € concert day discount ticket for students and young people under the age of 20 (available for purchase on the concert day at the Kuopio Music Centre Ticket Office).
