Fantastic British music at KSO online concert on 27th of January

Nikita Boriso-Glebsky as the violin soloist and Sasha Mäkilä as the conductor

The KSO spring season 2022 starts on the 27th of January at 7 pm with an online concert which introduces fantastic music from British composers. Benjamin Britten’s Violin concerto will be interpreted by Nikita Boriso-Glebsky who has been awarded in various competitions. The program includes also the fifth symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The orchestra will be conducted by Sasha Mäkilä. Due to the corona restrictions there will be no live audience at the concert.

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s concert Fantastic British Evening on 27 January begins with Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto Op. 15. The second piece of the evening is Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No 5 in D major. The concert livestreamed from the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall is conducted by Sasha Mäkilä.

At the time of composition of the Violin Concerto Op. 15 Benjamin Britten himself said, ”It is without question my best piece. It is rather serious I’m afraid.” Despite of its solemn mood violinists love the concerto. The soloist will be Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, winner of the 2010 International Sibelius Violin Competition. Boriso-Glebsky also won the Fritz Kreisler competition that same year. About performing Nikita has said: ”Every single performance is no less precious, as at the end of the day it’s so important to make a difference for the audience.”

Ralph Vaughan Williams completed his fifth symphony during World War II when he was 70 years old. He dedicated the symphony to Jean Sibelius ”without permission” as it reads in the inscription at the head of the work. Vaughan Williams even uses the opening material of Sibelius’s fourth symphony in his fifth. After listening to a broadcast of the work, Sibelius wrote that the ”symphony is a marvellous work.”

The concert is livestreamed from the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall to the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s YouTube Channel. The concert will be available on the YouTube Channel for one month after the concert date.
