Carl Orff composed Carmina Burana, his best known composition, in 1937. The texts are based on 24 poems selected from a medieval collection of songs and poems, the topics of which include the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils among others. In O Fortuna, the most famous part of Carmina Burana, Fortune, the cruel goddess brings both pleasure and suffering. In Carmina Burana influenced by Renaissance and Baroque, rhythm is often the primary musical element. Carmina Burana has become an established part of classic choral repertory and has been excerpted in diverse movie scores, television commercials, and even video games.
