Chief Conductor Jaakko Kuusisto also as a soloist with oboist Kyeong Ham

The KSO online concert “Rapid Changes” on 4th of February at 7 pm includes music from W.A. Mozart, J.S. Bach and Alessandro Marcello. The original plan included a world premiere of the Oboe Concerto by Maija Hynninen, but in the current circumstances the KSO was forced to make some rapid changes to the programme. The concert is conducted by the KSO Chief Conductor Jaakko Kuusisto, who will perform also as a violin soloist in Bach’s Double Concerto with oboist Kyeong Ham.

”Rapid Changes” is an apt title and description for the KSO concert on 4th of February. The original plan included, for example, a world premiere of the Oboe Concerto by Maija Hynninen, a Finnish female composer. In the current circumstances, referring to the latest COVID restrictions, the KSO was, however, forced to make some rapid changes and chose to turn toward a more traditional programme.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756—1791), the wonder child of music, wrote his charming Symphony No 27 in G Major in 1773, at the age of 17, when spending a lot of time in Italy. Mozart’s contemporary, Alessandro Marcello (1773-1747) was a Venetian nobleman. The Oboe Concerto in D minor, now his best-known work, was originally published under his Venetian Arcadian Academy pseudonym. This baroque concerto, having also traits that sound Vivaldian, was therefore for many years attributed to Vivaldi, among other composers.

The concert ends with Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin where Kyeong Ham, the Co-Principal Oboist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra born in South Korea, and Chief Conductor of the KSO, Jaakko Kuusisto, now with his violin infront of his own orchestra, are having an alluring musical dialogue with each other and the string ensemble.

Before the beginning of the concert, at 6.45 pm there will be a discussion on the meaning and importance of culture during the COVID pandemic. The discussion is in Finnish, as well as the subtitles. Participants of the discussion are Deputy Mayor of the City of Kuopio Pekka Vähäkangas, Chief Conductor of the KSO Jaakko Kuusisto and Director of the Kuopio Music Centre and the KSO Katariina Kummala.

The concert has been recorded on Thursday 4 February, 2021 at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall. It will be published on the KSO’s YouTube Channel and the KSO’s website.  The concert is available at the KSO’s YouTube Channel until the end of the spring season 2021. The concert is recorded in cooperation with Taustamarkkinat BGMT Oy.
