Join us to kick off the New Year with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s concert that caters for an irresistible blend of bubbling joy, light flirtation, fiery love and warmth seasoned with a suitable dose of melancholy. During the evening, we will travel from the the lightly sparkling atmosphere of Viennese waltzes to the melodic landscapes of Argentine tango and the forgotten tango quarters of Buenos Aires.
The opening half of the concert consists of irresistible Viennese elegance. The Strauss musical dynasty, especially the ‘King of Waltz’ Johann Strauss Jr., is an integral part of Vienna’s history. Hits of their time, the evergreen waltzes and polkas shimmer their ageless charm and sophistication across times and borders. The melodies of Viennese waltzes will seduce you into the middle of Central European New Year’s atmosphere that bubbles lightly in champagne shades.
The evening culminates in electrifyingly hot musical fireworks with the melodies of Astor Piazzolla’s symphonic tango nuevo. Tunes from the golden age of tango, colourfully orchestrated by bandoneon virtuoso Henrik Sandås, transform into a sophisticated but passionate concert tango. Oozing with rugged romanticism, the melodies also entangle Finland’s top pair of Argentine tango dancers – Maria Elisabet and Pasi Laurén, whose dance idiom shows influences from both tango nuevo and salon tango. The dancers are seduced to tango’s embrace by, for example, one of the most frequently played tangos of all time, La Cumparsita (‘The Little Parade’) and El Choclo, better known as ‘The Kiss of Fire’.
