Music has the power to convey that which cannot be expressed with words. So it seems apt that it would be the language of choice to explore dreams, fairy tales & memories. Matthieu Stefanelli wanted to probe the outer reaches of our reality in his work, Hypnos. Inspired by the Greek god of sleep, the music traverses the ephemeral landscape of the dream world with its often inexplicable joys and night-terrors.
As children, dreams could seem as real as the waking world. Even when awake, children can have a incredibly vivid imagination that allows them to build worlds within the real world. As a bonafide child prodigy, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, built his imaginarium out of musical notes. When he was a mere 11-year-old, he turned his bright young mind to writing a set of piano pieces based on fairy tales. The next year at age 12(!), he orchestrated these Märchenbilder, op.3. His mastery of orchestration, harmony, and melodic inventioned are out of this world.
Then as adults, we gain experience and accumulate memories. Though these memories are not real, they can evoke genuine emotions. Conversely, music has the power to arouse those feelings which can revive memories of the past. That’s perhaps the reason behind the enduring success of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto, who’s music is steeped in a sense of nostalgia, wistfulness, longing and passion. The great Finnish virtuoso, Olli Mustonen, joins us to celebrate the close of our Spring season. (Eugene Tzigane)
