”Beethoven 4 is one of the happiest pieces I know. Full of jokes and folk-playing the symphony starts in an almost Mahleresque manner. Pure genius! Britta Byström and I have worked together in 20 works and her series of Walks are almost like puzzles, with a theme of her own ”walk” she weaves in themes of Beethoven. First half will be colourful. Rameau brings us sailers, hunters, fair maidens and a visit to the under world. And if that isn’t enough we get to meet and hear the remarkable Justin Taylor in Poulenc’s concerto for harpsichord.”

Many of this spring’s guest soloists are delightful new acquaintances, including the French-American harpsichordist Justin Taylor, who will make his debut in Kuopio. ”Poulenc’s concerto is one of the first concertos written in the 20th century for harpsichord: it contributed to the revival of interest in this instrument. Poulenc reinterprets the codes of Baroque music, using the harpsichord and orchestra with shimmering colors, themes that are at times melancholic, dance-like, or rhythmic. It is a masterpiece, too rarely performed, full of discoveries! For this work, Poulenc drew inspiration from French music, particularly the operas of Rameau, from which we will also perform excerpts from Hippolyte and Aricie”, as Taylor describes.
