”Beethoven 4 is one of the happiest pieces I know. Full of jokes and folk-playing the symphony starts in an almost Mahleresque manner. Pure genius! Britta Byström and I have worked together in 20 works and her series of Walks are almost like puzzles, with a theme of her own ”walk” she weaves in themes of Beethoven. First half will be colourful. Rameau brings us sailers, hunters, fair maidens and a visit to the under world.”

The concert’s new soloist, Matias Häkkinen, describes the concerto: “Poulenc’s harpsichord concerto is a very distinctive work. It is a lively and at times even humorous piece, whose outer movements rush forward at a tremendous speed—and then even faster. Within the context of harpsichord repertoire, this concerto is written for a remarkably large orchestral ensemble. However, it is skillfully composed: the orchestra is allowed to play with full richness, yet the harpsichord still comes through naturally and does not get buried under the orchestral sound. In this concert, I will be playing an instrument contemporary to the work and suited to its purpose—a ‘giant harpsichord’ built according to early 20th‑century ideals, which sounds quite different from the more familiar harpsichords modeled after Baroque-era instruments.”
