KSO performs Alissa Firsova’s Stages for the first time in Finland

On Thursday 23rd of March at 7 pm at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra will perform Robert Schumann’s intensive cello concerto interpreted by the master cellist Marko Ylönen. At the KSO season concert Time For Miracles we will also enjoy the Finnish premiere of Alissa Firsova’s Stages – the solo parts of the piece will be played by the orchestra’s trumpetist Vitoldas Sokolnikas. In addition the programme includes György Ligeti’s Concert Romănesc and Joseph Haydn’s 96th symphony. The orchestra is conducted by Leo McFall.

The most recent composition of the KSO season concert on the 23rd of March is the contemporary composer Alissa Firsova’s Stages for trumpet and strings, which has been inspired by Herman Hesse’s poem with the same name. The poem encourages us to live and let go when the time comes. The solo trumpet part is interpreted by Vitoldas Sokolnikas, the associate principal trumpetist of the KSO.

The evening begins with György Ligeti’s colourful and rhythmic Concert Romănesc, which has been deeply influenced by the composer’s love of Romanian folk music. Ligeti was inspired by the use of Alp horns, a sound reminiscent of his childhood, in the Romanian folk music and this technique can be heard, for example, when the horns play with “natural tuning”.

Robert Schumann’s masterful cello concerto with singing lyricism requires both technical skills and an interpreter of the highest order. These demands will be met by Marko Ylönen, who has a long career as a cellist. He has been working in many roles: as a soloist, a solo cellist in many orchestras, a chamber musician, an Artistic Director in several festivals and a teacher. He has been a prizewinner in different competitions and has recorded a great amount of modern and traditional repertoire.

The evening will end with the 96th symphony of Joseph Haydn, the first of his great London symphonies. It was notable also because a huge chandelier fell from the ceiling during the first performance. Because no-one was injured, the symphony got its’ nickname Miracle. The KSO is be conducted by Leo McFall, who is revisiting Kuopio.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 30 minutes, including interval.
