Versatile violinist Shunske Sato as the soloist of Brahms’ concerto

At the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s season concert Sunrise Serenade on Thursday 24th of October at 6 p.m., the audience can experience two sunrises during one evening under the baton of the KSO chief conductor Eugene Tzigane. The concert begins with Ida Moberg’s Sunrise and Prelude from her Suite for Orchestra. Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Serenade transports the audience from nocturnal romances to sunrises and joyous celebrations. On his first visit to Finland and the Kuopio Music Centre, violinist Shunske Sato will interprete Johannes Brahms’ violin concerto.

Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Serenade was inspired by a trip to Italy in 1906/1907. It has all the hallmarks of a travelogue, particularly because the composer, dubbed the “Brahms of Sweden”, alluded to a “veiled hint of a programme”. The serenade is a beautiful mixture of different characteristics of the Romantic period: Mendelssohnian restraint and clarity, intoxicatingly sensual Wagnerian harmonies, a Brahmsian penchant for soulful, yet understated melodies and allusions to Renaissance polyphony. There are festivities, nocturnal romances, eventually a sunrise and joyful life-affirming celebrations.

The program begins with another Sunrise, this time from the Finnish composer Ida Moberg’s Suite for Orchestra. Moberg’s style was inspired by Brahms, whose violin concerto will be interpreted by Shunske Sato. He is the director of the period orchestra Concerto Köln and an expert in historical performance practices of the 19th century. In addition, Sato works as a chamber musician and a teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

On the same day, 24th of October at 12 o’clock the audience can enjoy the KSO open rehearsal, where the orchestra will play excerpts of the evening’s concert programme. Admission to the open rehearsal is free. In addition, you can enjoy restaurant Oodi’s buffet lunch in the Hall of Light between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The price of lunch is 12 euros.

Before the concert, at 5:30 pm at the Kuopio Music Centre Hall of Light, a Pre-Talk event open to everyone is organized.

Tickets: 33 € / 27 € senior citizens and groups min. 20 persons / 11 € children under the age of 16 and students / 4 € concert day discount ticket for students and young people under the age of 20.
