The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s Season Series concerts of the spring season 2025 will start on Thursday 23rd of January at 6 pm with the Facets of Inspiration concert at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall. The concert, conducted by the KSO chief conductor Eugene Tzigane, will begin with Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question, which takes its inspiration from the cosmos, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. The concert’s soloist will be the orchestra’s associate concertmaster Adrian Ibañez-Resjan, who will interpret Camille Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The evening will end with Jean Sibelius’ nature-inspired Symphony No. 5.
In The Unanswered Question Charles Ives found his inspiration in the cosmos itself. Against a vast and incomprehensible cosmic tapestry, small fragile and uncertain spirits implore the universe for an answer, but to no avail. For Ralph Vaughan Williams, the muse spoke to him in the form of a 16th-century hymn that would become the foundation of his evocative Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
Sometimes, inspiration springs from personal encounters. Camille Saint-Saëns channeled his admiration for Cuban violinist Rafael Díaz Albertini into the vibrant Havanaise. Pablo de Sarasate, the celebrated Spanish violinist, inspired the exhilarating Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso, a piece infused with the spirit of the fandango.
Nature, too, can awaken the creative spirit. Jean Sibelius, witnessing the majestic flight of swans, was so moved that he captured their essence in his Swan Hymn, a theme that would dominate his Fifth Symphony.
On the same day, 23rd of January at 12 noon you can enjoy KSO’s open rehearsal, where the orchestra will play excerpts of the evening’s concert programme under the baton of Eugene Tzigane. Admission to the open rehearsal is free. In addition, you can enjoy restaurant Oodi’s buffet lunch in the Hall of Light between 11 am and 2 pm. The price of lunch is 12 euros.
Before the concert, at 5:30 pm at the Kuopio Music Centre Hall of Light, a Pre-Talk event open to everyone is organized.
