Enigmas and treasures are revealed at KSO season soncert on 9th of February

Dorothy Howell’s piano concerto interpreted by British Danny Driver

The KSO season concert on Thursday 9th of February at 7 pm introduces a real treasure, Dorothy Howell’s Piano concerto in D minor. It will be interpreted at the Concert Hall of the Kuopio Music Centre by the British pianist Danny Driver. The concert begins with Anna Clyne’s Pivot premiered in 2021 and it ends with Edward Elgar’s Enigma vartiations. The orchestra is conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing.

The KSO season concert Enigmas and Treasures introduces music of British composers. We will hear Piano concerto in D minor by Dorothy Howell, who was nicknamed the English Strauss. The composer herself premiered this skilfully built concerto of late Romanticism in 1919 in London.

In Kuopio Howell’s concerto is interpreted by the British pianist Danny Driver, whose recordings have won him numerous awards, for example in the New York Times’ list of 2017’s Best Classical Recordings. Driver has performed as the soloist around the world and given acclaimed recitals in Europe, Asia and Northern America.

The KSO concert begins with Anna Clyne’s Pivot from the year 2021. Clyne belongs to the most successful British composers of her age. ”Pivot is inspired by my experiences at the Edinburgh Festival where I enjoyed an array of fantastic performances across the arts. It is this variety that I have tried to capture in Pivot which, as the title suggests, pivots from one experience to another”, Clyne tells.

The concert ends with Edwars Elgar’s Enigma variations conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing, who is revisiting Kuopio. Each of the variations is dedicated to one of Elgar’s close friends and each section is headed by the initials of the friend portrayed. According to Elgar, the true mystery is however the piece’s theme.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 20 minutes, including interval.
