Reflections of light at the online concert on 6th of May

Young talent Kasmir Uusitupa as the violin soloist of KSO

At the KSO livestream concert Reflections of Light on Thursday 6th of May at 7 pm the programme includes Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto and Franz Berwald’s 3rd symphony – both pieces full of light and suitable for springtime. The orchestra is conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing and the violin soloist is a young Finnish talent Kasmir Uusitupa.

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s online concert Reflections of Light introduces two compositions from the Early Romantic Period, both suitable for the rise of spring owing to their bright and delightful characteristics. Both compositions have been completed or premiered the same year, in 1845.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is a classic violin masterpiece of the Romantic Period. Mendelssohn collaborated with his friend, violinist Ferdinand David throughout the composition process. Now the concerto’s poetic passion and lyrical melodies are in the hands of violinist Kasmir Uusitupa, currently studying at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Franz Berwald is considered the founder of musical Romanticism in Sweden as well as the first great Scandinavian composer. Although the third symphony, also called Sinfonie Singulière, was completed in 1845, the same year Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was premiered, it did not receive its first performance until 1905. Sinfonie Singulière inhabits its own distinct Northern rustic quality one associated with later Nordic composers such as Grieg, Sibelius and Nielsen. For some reason the symphony has been somewhat neglected and it has also been rarely performed.

The concert is hosted by Katariina Kummala, the director of the Kuopio Music Centre and Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.

The livestream concert will be published on the KSO’s YouTube Channel and the KSO’s website.  The concert is available at the KSO’s YouTube Channel until the end of the spring season 2021. The concert will be published on the 6th of May  in cooperation with Taustamarkkinat BGMT Oy.
