At the last KSO season concert of the autumn 2021 on the 2nd of December at 7 pm we may enjoy a more rarely performed Piano Concerto by Dorothy Howell composed in the 1920’s. On the stage of the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall we introduce a musician couple guest performing in Kuopio for the first time: the soloist will be pianist Danny Driver and the orchestra will be conducted by Rebecca Miller. The programme also includes Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No 7.

Dorothy Howell, who was nicknamed the English Strauss, composed Piano Concerto in D minor in the beginning of the 1920’s. The KSO season concert Hidden Treasure introduces this skillfully constructed piece of the Late Romanticism style. The soloist will be British pianist Danny Driver, who released his latest album of Ligeti’s Etudes on the Hyperion label to unanimous high praise. The highlights of his 2021/22 season include among others performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall and a three-concert series at the Wigmore Hall.

In the beginning of the concert Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta leads us to the Hungarian town of Galánta. The dances in this piece are derived from the 18th-century Verbunkos, a characteristic Hungarian dance of military origin.

The concert will end with Antonín Dvořák’s masterful 7th symphony. There are plenty of warm-hearted lyrical themes but also a darker side with a sense of tragedy in the symphony. The orchestra is conducted by California-born Rebecca Miller, who works as the Chief Conductor of the Uppsala Kammarorkester. Most recently she has guest-conducted among others the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

The duration of the concert is about 1 hour 45 minutes including intermission.
