Mezzosoprano Virpi Räisänen as a soloist in the song cycle by Outi Tarkiainen

The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s online concert Birth of a New Spring on Thursday 18 February, 2021 at 7 pm offers the audience earthy musical landscapes, a chance to take a break from everyday life and pause for a while. The concert livestreamed from the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall includes music from Ida Moberg, Joonas Kokkonen and Outi Tarkiainen. The concert is conducted by Jan Söderblom and the soloist will be mezzosoprano Virpi Räisänen.

The livestream concert will begin with Ida Moberg’s (1859-1947) Stillhet (Swedish for Silence). Ida Moberg was the first widely educated female Finnish composer. Silence, a short cradle song for string orchestra is extracted from Moberg’s unfinished opera Asiens ljus (The Light of Asia).

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996). Il paesaggio (The Landscape, 1986-1987) was to be his last work and was inspired by the landscape round the nearby lake of his hometown of Järvenpää. Towards the end of this rarely performed piece he wrote the word enigma and three motives in homage to three other Järvenpää composers: Jean Sibelius, Erik Bergman ja Paavo Heininen.

Eanan, giđa nieida (in English The Earth, Spring’s Daughter) is a mythical epos illustrating the core experiences of the North from the history to our times. The text is a vast collage of Sami poetry – the Sami people being the only indigenous people in the Europe. The strong mutual bond between the generations and the Sami culture’s cyclical perception of time are present also in the structure of the work: the music unfolds in layers and cycles, to be born again and again. The work was commissioned by three northernmost professional orchestras in Europe: Lapland Chamber Orchestra (FIN), Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra (SWE) and Arctic Philharmonic (NOR), which is based in Bodø and is the twin city of Kuopio. The recording made by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra has been nominated for 2021 Emma Awards in the Classical Album category.

There will be an introduction to the work by Outi Tarkiainen before the song cycle (spoken and subtitles in Finnish). In the Epilogue, there is be a short film called Change of Faces (2016) by Elina Oikari. It has been inspired by Sami poetry and it can be seen as a kinetic meditation about landscapes of the Arctic.
