Winner of the international Crusell Competition Jonathan Leibovitz as the soloist of KSO

Programme including Weber’s beautiful concerto and Berio’s Rendering restored from Schubert’s sketches

The KSO’s concert New Interpretations on the 11th of November at 7 pm brings the winner of the international Crusell Competition Jonathan Leibovitz to Kuopio. He will perform the first clarinet concerto of Carl Maria von Weber at the Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall. The concert will end with Luciano Berio’s Rendering based on material by Franz Schubert. The orchestra is conducted by Elena Schwarz.

The KSO concert on the 11th of November starts with Louise Farrenc’s (1804–1875) Overture No 2. Farrenc has been unknown to symphonic audiences like many women composers of the past – the overture, however, sounds like the work of a master of the orchestra. The soloist number of the evening, Carl Maria von Weber’s (1786-1826) first clarinet concerto includes both beautiful lines and fast, technical passages. The piece is interpreted by Jonathan Leibovitz, winner of the latest international Crusell Competition in 2021. Leibovitz, born in Israel, is now preparing his master’s degree in Basel and has played as a soloist with many orchestras such as The Israel Chamber Orchestra, Haifa Symphonic Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic.

The concert will end with Luciano Berio’s (1925-2003) Rendering, which is based on Franz Schubert’s sketches of his 10th symphony. According to Berio this restoration is made along the lines of the modern restoration of frescoes that aims at reviving the old colours without however trying to disguise the damage that time has caused, often leaving inevitable empty patches in the composition. The orchestra is conducted by Elena Schwarz, who is one of the conductors of Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and was selected for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2018/2019 Dudamel Fellowship Program. During the season 2021-11 she will conduct the BBC Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra among others.

The duration of the concert is 1 hour 30 minutes including an intermission.
