The main number of the KSO’s first Season Concert of the Autumn is the Chinese Tan Dun’s spellbinding Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women, based on a secret and ancient language of Chinese women from the village of Hunan. The soloist of Nu Shu will be Viviane Nüscheler, the winner of the international Helsinki Harp Competition. The concert on the 29th of September at 7 pm at the Kuopio Music Centre’s Concert Hall will be conducted by Leo McFall. A masculine point of view is represented by Richards Strauss’ passionate Don Juan.

The KSO new harp, Minerva Gold will be in the spotlight of the season opening on the 29th of September. The harp soloist, Viviane Nüscheler, has been awarded in several competitions. The main number of the concert, Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women from the year 2013 is composed by Tan Dun, who won an Oscar for his score to the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000.

Nu Shu tells the story of a secret language created by Chinese women, dated back to 13th century Hunan and passed down from generation to generation. Tan Dun was researching the language, filming 13 microfilms and composing music for years. The microfilms about mothers, daughters and sisters’ lives serve as the center of his composition.

In the beginning of the concert we will hear Richard Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan from the year 1888. The work, composed when Strauss was only twenty-four years old, became an international success. In his composition Strauss explores the possibilities of a large orchestra and orchestral virtuosity.

The KSO is conducted by Leo McFall, born in the United Kingdom and studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy. He won the Opus Klassik 2021 award for best recording of 18th Century Symphonic Music and featured in the New York Times ”Best Classical of 2020” with his recording of Emilie Meyer’s first two Symphonies.
