KYÖSTI HAATANEN

Conductor, choir master

Kyösti Haatanen studied violin and viola as well as orchestra conducting at the Sibelius Academy with professors Alois Klima and Jorma Panula, Haatanen received his diploma in conducing in 1974. Haatanen continued his studies at the Berlin College Of Music and Jyväskylä University in Finland. He played violin and viola at the Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra, the Finnish National Opera orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Radio Symphony Orchestra. During 1973-80 Haatanen worked as the music director for the city of Savonlinna and in 1980-86 as the conductor and artistic director of the Jyväskylä Symphony. At the Savonlinna Opera Festival Haatanen has conducted Boris Godunov, The Creation by Haydn, Perfect Harmony by Sarmanto and his own Requiem. Kyösti Haatanen has also composed and arranged both classical and entertaining music. His known works include the song series "Matkalla" for a mixed choir (1994), Christmas Oratorium (1994) for soloists, choir and symphony orchestra and Requiem (1997) for soloists, choir and symphony orchestra. Kyösti Haatanen is the choir master of the Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir.
