Children and Youth - Open rehearsals - Chamber Music Ensembles - K9 Card
In fall 2004 the Arts Council of North Savo implemented nine culture education projects in the schools of the North Savo region in cooperation with different local arts institutions. The project was called Valoa latoon (free translation: Light to the Barn). Kuopio Symphony Orchestra was one of the arts institutions involved in the project. The education project consisted of a 12-18 hour course under the guidance of an orchestra musician. The workshop period included for example improvisation exercises and meetings with a live composer, the orchestra intendant and musicians. The excursion day consisted of participating an orienteering tour around the Kuopio Music Centre, interviewing orchestra musicians and other members of the Music Centre and Symphony Orchestra staff as well as attending the orchestra rehearsals. The period ended with a concert of the KSO. The project continued in 2005.
One member of the KSO is also a part of the cultural education team of the city of Kuopio. The team consists of members from the city theatre, the city library, the city museums and the city orchestra. Thus far the cultural education team has implemented various projects combining the arts for example in connection with the Anniversaries of Minna Canth and J.V. Snellman.
One part of the KSO's activities involving children and youth are the school groups attending the rehearsals.

The K9 Card is a culture card for the 9th graders. The K9 project of the city of Kuopio has been historical in Finland. A project such as the K9, which offers numerous possibilities for such a large quantity of young people to experience culture, has never been implemented before. The K9 Card was introduced in Kuopio in February 2001. The following year it was integrated as a permanent part of the services provided by the Centre of Cultural Affairs in the city of Kuopio.
The K9 Card is handed out to all 9th graders in the Kuopio region at the beginning of the 9th school year of grade school. The K9 Card entitles the 9th graders from the region of Kuopio (the municipalities of Kuopio, Karttula, Tervo, Maaninka, Siilinjärvi, Nilsiä, Lapinlahti and Vehmersalmi) to take advantage of the cultural services of the city of Kuopio on their own freetime. A K9 contact person, in most cases a fellow student, is named for each junior high school in the beginning of each school year. The contact person is expected to inform the other students on current cultural events in Kuopio - theatre performances, concerts and exhibitions - as well as to interact with the representatives of the cultural establishments of the city of Kuopio and the K9 working team. The cultural establishments organize regular meetings during the school year for all the K9 contact persons as well as their teachers.
The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra offers the 9th graders a free entrance to most of the KSO concerts of the season in question in case there are free seats left on the day of the concert. The K9 concerts of the spring 2006 season are indicated on this website with a K9 logo.
The students should claim their ticket personally and if asked they must present their student I.D. card. The students are not allowed to book tickets beforehand. Exception! Students from the nearby municipalities as well as Riistavesi, Vehmersalmi and Kallavesi junior high school are entitled to book their tickets on the day of the concert.
